To All SEA Board Members, Alums, and Class Members:

My name is Steven Loi, a member of the current SEA class. I was speaking to Linda yesterday at the Board Reception (and I am guilty for it was my first time there) and we came across the topic of recruitment and finding more potential members.

I want to first say that I'm thoroughly enjoying this learning experience and the resources that are available to us class members. It's unfortunate that if I were not Alicia Cheung's friend (and fraternity member), I probably would not have even considered on this wonderful opportunity. Alicia joined SEA last year only because of hearing from her friend, Jacob Riveria from the prior year. Then last night, Linda mentioned last night about the board meeting and how we need to recruit more members.

I was heavily involved with my co-ed business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, while I was still a student (2003-2006). I also know a few members that have experienced SEA that are part of the other business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. I believe there is so much SEA can do to leverage off the publicity that both organizations garner. It will serve both parties well - SEA gives great credibility to both student organizations if teamed up and both fraternities will give SEA exposure to many driven individuals. This exposure will be both those that are members and those that are prospective members since both organizations highly recruit as well. With Alpha Kappa Psi, we do two recruiting events a year, we throw workshops and have guest speakers, and we are about to have an event called Networking for Success, where a handful of companies (10-12) gets to meet pre-screened, qualified, and driven students in a round table setting to get to know one another - students getting to learn more about the companies and submit their resume and company reps that gets to evaluate potential job hires. To say the least, we outreach to many driven students.

I'm bringing up this point is because I wished SEA can be more visible to at least the UC Davis campus. I remember SEA being a booth at the Career Fair, but I think that may be not the best market to target - those that attend there are stressed/nervous to find a job - as are not looking for an entrepreneurial education/workshop/network. But those that are part of the two business organizations are primed candidates to be interested in SEA.

If there's any consideration to better market more willingness to outreach differently to Davis students, I would love to leverage my connections that I still have with my organization to promote SEA. I know Alpha Kappa Psi would be honored to be affiliated with SEA as well as genuinely promote this organization. With this direction, you have three heavily promoters/marketers pulling for SEA: Calvin, Alicia, and myself.

I would love to hear feedback. Or be a part of your initiatives to bring to light to driven students this great opportunity. Thanks for listening!

Steven: Thanks for your comments and your willingness to help with student recruitment! I would love to take you up on your offer to help recruit future SEA students through your business fraternity. It does sound like a group of motivated, business students who would be great SEA candidates. I will give you a call to discuss.

Steven: Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments about SEA student recruitment. Over the years, referrals from SEA students to their fraternity/sorority colleagues have been a primary source of new SEA students. Plus, they are pre-screened! I definitely think we should focus on this resource in the upcoming year, and the Networking for Success event also sounds perfect. Keep these great ideas coming!
